Laying a new lawn in your garden is a good way to soften hard landscaping features in the garden, reduce maintenance and is great for children and pets to use. Laying a lawn from turf is a quick and affordable way to get an instant result in your garden and can be used within a few days rather than if installing a new lawn from seed, which can take a weeks to germinate and become established.
Although it is quicker to lay, the key to ensuring your new lawn thrives long term, is all in the preparation of the soil before laying the turf or for sowing seed. It is advisable to excavate a minimum of 2-3 inches which will remove weed roots from the current lawn area, cultivate the soil and level before installing topsoil to the area which will be levelled and compacted and then raked to fine tilth before the turf or seed is laid.
It is best to lay the turf in mid-Autumn, but it can be laid anytime of the year as long as its not too wet or too cold, if laid in the spring/summer months then the newly laid turf will need daily watering throughout the spring/summer months. Seed is best done late spring/summer months when the ground starts to warm up allowing the seed to germinate.
A lawn made from turf will cost more than a lawn made from seed but turf will give you instant effect and quicker usability.
